Previously, this area was used for harvesting the longleaf and splash pine. The land was also used for naval stores production, grazing and hunting. Lake George State Forest offers many recreational opportunities. Bluffton Recreation Area offers fishing, picnicking, and a three-quarter-mile interpretive nature trail. While the park does not have a boat ramp, it does offer a launch for canoes and Jon boats from the bank. Fishing is available at Jenkins Pond, and primitive camping is offered with a valid permit.
The Bluffton Mound and Midden, located in the Bluffton Recreation Area, are rich in archaeological history. Indigenous people inhabited the area for thousands of years.
