Join us for a 2.5-mile hike at Heart Island Conservation Area and explore a sandhill ecosystem! The Volusia County Explore Volusia program invites you to join Environmental Specialist Tommy Nordmann for a hike and discover Heart Island Conservation Area, part of the 39,642-acre Lake George Wildlife Management Area. Participants will hike approximately 2.5 miles and learn about the native plants and animals found there. **Important note: Waivers must be completed in full to participate in the program. You can download and complete a waiver ahead of time by visiting Explore Volusia. ** Some map apps and GPS devices will take you to the incorrect location. Use the following link to direct you to Heart Island Conservation Area: Marked Location in De Leon Springs, FL United States - Apple Maps ACTIVITY: This will be a moderate to difficult hike due to soft sand and hills. RESERVATIONS: Required. Unless you have a confirmation email, you are not registered. TICKETS: No printed ticket is necessary. AGES: Ages ten and up are welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult. ATTIRE: closed-toe shoes, comfortable clothing for the outdoors WHAT TO BRING: water, bug spray, sunscreen ** Some of our trails have mud and/or standing water because they are located in wetland ecosystems and because of seasonal rains and high tides. We recommend you bring a pair of waterproof boots in addition to your regular hiking shoes if you don't want your shoes to get wet. Our hike leader will let you know the condition of the trails prior to the start of the hike. FACILITIES: There is a port-a-let on site but no running water.
