DeBary Hall Historic Site hosts Trails Day celebration

Get your heart pumping and your feet moving as you celebrate Volusia County’s growing trails system on National Trails Day, Saturday, June 2. Volusia County’s Parks, Recreation and Culture Division will sponsor an outdoor family event from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at DeBary Hall Historic Site, 198 Sunrise Blvd., DeBary.

The celebration will be set up at the Visitors Center near the trailhead to the county’s Spring-to-Spring Trail. County staff will lead a walking tour at 9 a.m., show a 15-minute movie about the history of steamboats on the St. Johns River at 9:30 a.m., and have a children’s scavenger hunt during the event. The River to Sea Transportation Planning Organization will give away free bicycle helmets, and environmental groups will staff information tables.

National Trails Day is promoted by the American Hiking Society to educate the public about the importance of trails in the United States.

The county’s major trail systems are the Spring-to-Spring Trail and the East Central Regional Rail Trail. When finished, the Spring-to-Spring Trail will stretch 27.2 miles from DeLeon Springs State Park to Green Springs Park, and the East Central Regional Rail Trail will cover 35.9 miles from Deltona to Edgewater with a 10-mile leg to Titusville. Once the links are completed, the trails will become part of the five-county St. Johns River-to-Sea Loop.
