The Dead River paddling trail circles Hontoon Island, following a cut-off channel and the modern route of the St. Johns River. The whole trip is more than ten miles, with launch sites at the entrance to Hontoon Island State Park (reached via Hontoon Road, County Road 4125) or a Blue Spring State Park put-in (at the west end of the French Avenue in Orange City, County Road 4142). Both the dead river and the main river offer classic views of this famous, lush St. Johns country.
